The story of how the Brazilian Expeditionary Force came to fight in the mountains of Italy is so unlikely that their nickname of The Smoking Snakes (the equivalent of the English idiom "flying pigs") is very apt. Although they started out with an array of equipment, including British webbing and French Adrian helmets, by the time of the Monte Castello battle in which they displayed their worth, they were armed almost exclusively with US equipment.
