Pike & Shotte Highlander Raising the Clans
To raise the gathering of the Clans and as a declaration of hostile intent it was common for the"Fiery cross" to be run through all the towns and villages, so that no one could be in any doubt that danger was near and all good men must go to do service for their Laird.
As the fiery cross passed through, a general clamour would go up and soon the men would leave the plough, the land and gather up their weapons and simple rations of oatmeal and whisky.
We go to war...please note this has no parallels with less savoury types who use similar imagery in more modern times.
